On the 13th of November 2008 a unique event took part in Krasnoyarsk, it was the world premiere of The Double Concerto for Violoncello, Gusli and Symphony Orchestra by the composer Oleg Meremkulov.
The Concerto was represented within the limits of the Siberian Festival of Contemporary Music, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Krasnoyarsk Composers` Organization. Moscow soloists Mikhail Kuritsky (violoncello), Pavel Lukoyanov (gusli) and the Moscow conductor Roman Belyshev introduced this innovatory composition to the audience judgment.
The Concerto strikes the listeners by freshness of sounding and uncommonness of timbre combinations of academic and folk musical instruments with symphony orchestra.
The idea of creation of this Concerto belongs to the Honoured Artist of Russia, professor Mikhail Kuritsky and Honoured Artist of Russia, professor Lyubov Zhuk.
Gusli is a very old Russian musical instrument (classic musical instrument), undergoing nowadays its second birth. Rebirth and formation of the unique folk instrument gusli and formation of academic school of gusli playing have been connected with the name of Lyubov Zhuk for 20 years past. It is a current trend, new opportunities in academic concert and a new genre in the development of gusli art.
Mikhail Kuritsky, the first performer of The Concerto emphasizes, that “there are no analogues of this composition in music history”.
Performance of this composition in Krasnoyarsk gave rise to many comments. Lilya Romanova, a musical expert from Tomsk, writes:
“The Concerto for Violoncello, Gusli and Symphony Orchestra of Oleg Meremkulov is perfectly unique. It staggers and charms listeners by extraordinary freshness of sounding. One would think that there cannot be a combination of such not corresponding instruments, but this unity exists and amazes; different timbre patches, rare richness of themes-symbols pleasantly influence the most refined perception of classical music experts. And having this abundance, the author is masterly able to use accuracy and logicality of structurally built form. Orchestration is wonderful, too”.
Renascence of primordial Russian folk instruments (having almost disappeared in the majority of cases) is Krasnoyarsk and Moscow musicians` great merit. The duet of soloists from Moscow, Mikhail Kuritsky (violoncello) and Pavel Lukoyanov (gusli) is the model of high mastery.
The complicated task of combination: folk and academic musical instruments together with symphony orchestra-was brilliantly solved in this composition.
Having been impressed by the music of Concerto, the famous Krasnoyarsk poet, a member of the Union of Russian Writers Nikolai Yeryomin wrote a poem ”Renascence of Russia” and dedicated it to the author.
